Please see the following message from Patti Ketterman, President and CAO of Claiborne Medical Center:

Dear Facebook Friends, we need your help! Claiborne Medical Center and Covenant Health have been working with CMS (Medicare), the State of TN, and other organizations to change the Wage Index component of how we are reimbursed. Medicare reimburses hospitals based on an amount for a diagnosis multiplied by a Wage Index factor which is to be reflective of the cost of providing care in each area of the country. For example, the national average Wage Index is 1, but some hospitals have a wage index higher than 1, and others lower than 1. The Wage Index for our area is 0.7032. This means reimbursement in our area is 30% less than the national average. This puts us in one of the lowest reimbursement areas in the country!

CMS has finally proposed legislation which would take up to 5% from the hospitals with a Wage Index in the top 25% and give it to the hospitals in the bottom 25%. This means hospitals in East Tennessee would see an increase in their reimbursement. This is critical for hospitals in our area to provide raises, purchase equipment and most importantly to continue our mission of serving the health needs of our communities.

The proposed legislation is a huge step, but we need your help! CMS needs to hear from not just our employees but our community about how important this Wage Index issue is to our hospital and all hospitals in our area.

HOW YOU CAN HELP – We encourage you to write a comment of support! The website is:
www.regulations.gov/document?D=CMS-2019-0073-0003

To write a comment of support, click the “Comment Now” tab on the right, and place your message in the Comment box, and then click the, “Submit Comment” box. Your comment can be as simple as, “I strongly support the CMS proposed rule CMS-1716-P and it’s changes to the Medicare Area Wage Index”. CMS is now accepting public comments on the proposal until 4:59PM on June 24, 2019.

Thank you for your support of our hospital and community.

Sincerely,

Patti Ketterman, President and CAO
